History of Wayanad
Dating its history back to the 18th century, Wayanad was earlier under the control of the Rajas of the Veda tribe. Later, after so many years, it was ruled by the Kottayam royal dynasty.
When Hyder Ali invaded the region of Wayanad during his courtship as a ruler of Mysore, he was so impressed with its beauty that he thought to bring it under his way. At the time of Tipu Sultan who was the son of Hyder Ali, this region was once again restored by the Pazhassi Rajahs of the Kottayam royal dynasty. But, after an agreement was made with the Britishers, Tipu Sultan handed over the entire area to the English people.
From the time Wayanad was in the hands of the British, it saw new developments every day. Among them, one was the new roads that were laid from Calicut and Thalassery to Ooty and the city of Mysore, which gave an opportunity to people outside Wayanad to come and settle in this region.
When Kerala came into recognition in 1956, Wayanad was a part of the Kannur district at that time. After a few years, the south part of the region was merged with the Kozhikode district and then in the year 1980, the north part was also combined with the south part, and together, it formed the present Wayanad district.
